Exploring Canberra

Here is a collection of various places we’ve visited in and around Canberra that are not included elsewhere on our website.  For general information on Canberra, click here.

Our first good look at kangaroos in the wild at Weston Park.
More roos at Weston Park. You can clearly see the variety of sizes.
This is as close as we could get before they moved on.
The kids found a playground.
This field outside of Weston Park is filled with Sulphur Crested Cockatoos.
We attended a Canberra Raiders rugby game our first week in town. The one in the pink shirt is the referee. Carol is amused with the short shorts and knee socks combination.
Chris and Dave visit the animatronic T-Rex at Questacon, the science museum.
An old kangaroo checks to see if Carol has any food at the animal encounter area of the National Zoo and Aquarium.
A very hungry dingo at the zoo.
Photo op with a white lion.
A view of Black Mountain topped by the Telstra Tower, a local reference landmark. It hosts the local TV transmitters as well as a revolving restaurant.
A path among the gum trees at the Botanical Gardens (located at the base of Black Mountain).
Another spot along the trail in the Botanical Gardens.
The Ambassador’s residence within the US Embassy on a cold winter’s day…the 4th of July!
Halloween at the Embassy. Need we say more?
A view of the Australian Parliament from the US Embassy.
Driving toward Parliament. It is partially built into the surrounding hill and topped with a flag on “the largest aluminum structure in the southern hemisphere.” Woo-hoo!
A view from the top of the Parliament complex (directly below the flagpole). The Old Parliament building is ahead with the Australian War Memorial in the distance at the base of Mount Ainslie.
A close up of the Old Parliament building…
…and a closer look at the War Memorial.
A sea of flowers at Floriade, “the largest flower festival in the southern hemisphere.”
Another view of Floriade.
Carrie and Angelina Ballerina at the Canberra Theatre Centre.
We also saw a one-man re-enactment of the original Star Wars Trilogy at the same theater. These two characters (the ones in costume) roamed the lobby before the show.
